Apocrypha

Apocrypha

2014

Apocrypha is a collective term for all biblical writings that, for various reasons, were not recognized by the ecclesiastical authorities. The entire network of rituals and rules that we have today in Christian religions arose more or less through agreements and voting among certain church representatives during the ecumenical councils. In the same way, the modern Bible was reshaped—some texts were added, some were removed; what seemed useful was kept—all in the service of strengthening the dogma.

This work consists of the sentence “GOD REWARDS THE SMART AND PUNISHES THE STUPID,” presented in the form of an eye-test chart, with the text becoming increasingly smaller. The letters are mirrored, as if seen in a reflection. Since I originally created the piece for an exhibition in Croatia, the text is written in Cyrillic, which adds an additional layer of difficulty to its reading.
